Eastburn Primary School

Subject Leader Introduction

Mrs Christina Farkas – English Subject Lead

As the English Subject Lead at Eastburn Primary School, I am passionate about nurturing a love for language and literacy in every child. I believe that English is more than just a subject—it is the key that unlocks learning across the curriculum and empowers pupils to communicate, think critically, and engage with the world around them.

At Eastburn, we follow a novel-based approach to our curriculum, using high-quality texts to inspire both teaching and learning. These carefully chosen books serve as the foundation for our curriculum, sparking curiosity, deepening understanding, and creating meaningful learning experiences. We integrate quality texts across subjects, using them to engage pupils and hook them into their learning, ensuring that literacy is at the heart of every aspect of their education.

My passion for English stems from the joy of seeing children grow into confident readers, writers, and storytellers. Literacy is a gateway to endless possibilities, and when pupils develop strong reading and writing skills, they gain the confidence to express themselves with clarity and creativity. I love helping children discover the magic of books, the power of words, and the excitement of crafting their own stories.

Creating a strong reading culture is at the heart of my role because here at Eastburn we believe that reading is the foundation for success in all areas of life. When children develop a love of reading, they are more likely to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. Books open doors to new worlds, spark curiosity, and inspire imagination, helping children to become independent learners who think deeply and engage with different perspectives. Through carefully chosen texts, engaging reading opportunities, and a supportive environment, we strive to ensure that every child finds joy in books and sees themselves as a reader.

In my role, I work closely with teachers to ensure that our English curriculum is engaging, inclusive, and challenging for all learners. My goal is to create an environment where every child—regardless of their starting point—feels supported and inspired to develop their literacy skills. By fostering a rich reading culture and encouraging a love for storytelling, I aim to equip our pupils with the confidence and skills they need to thrive, not just in school, but in life.
